The gen3 has a fair bit of free play in the steering, although it's still within Suzuki spec and passes an MOT.
Looking under the bonnet when an assistant turns the wheel back and forth in the free play range, the Pitman arm moves, so I don't think the lost motion is in the steering box.
What would be the likely cause further down the steering system? Balljoints? Is it anything cheap to change?

With an assistant (trusted) apply hand pressure resistance to each section of the steering you can get to in the engine bay and with the wheels up all the linkages and joints, this will tell you where the play is. Your most likely culprit is going to be the ball joints I would think but check each section.
