Hi All,
I believe you can adjust the steering box, but has anyone done it and did it remove the free play or just making things unusable?
Looking for real life feedback from those that tinker.
I am aware from new it is adjusted with a spring balance/ torque wrench to set the initial movement force, but once worn this becomes irrelevant. Any adjustment on a used unit will be a compromise between removing play in the worn section (straight ahead) and being over tight at the extremes of travel.
Just pondering if it ever gets played with in the Jimny forum or every one just leaves it alone and accepts the free play.

I just accept it
When mot inspector gives me advisory then
I will adjust it
Can be done by loosing lock nut then turn centre part around 2mm lock nut back up and see how it feels
Over tightening will cause damage

I've adjusted them on a couple of mine over the years. It does help get rid of the play around straight ahead, and it does make the steering slightly heavier as you get towards full lock but not enough to be a problem. Overall its a worthwhile improvement. The adjustment is fairly straightforward and it's reversible so there's nothing to lose from trying.

If you do it, do not remove all the free play. If you do it will break. As with anything mechanical it needs some play in it to work
