Tire size and recommendations

Hi guys, 

I have recently bought a 2002 Jimny and am looking to get a new set of tires for it for the winter in Ireland. I will be using it for a daily commute (only 10km) and also for getting to mountain biking trails 2/3 times a week so plenty of fire roads. 

It is completely standard and I am not planning on getting it lifted for the moment. 

The current tires are 205/70r15. From reading some posts on Big Jimny I believe the biggest tires I can fit without a lift or changing things up too much are 215/75s?

I'm thinking of BFG All Terrains, as I don't think I need MT's? Are there any alternatives that people are using / would recommend or are the AT's. solid shout? And if so... what size?!

BFG KO2 in 215/75 are a good choice and the Maxxis Worm-drive in 215/75 is very similar, but usually a bit cheaper.

I run Maxxis 215/75 and confirm they fit without a lift or wheel arch trimming.

I don't think BFG or Maxxis are available in 205/70 but I like the extra width and chunky tread pattern of the larger tyre.

I also have a set of Hancook Dynapro in 205/70, they look good and did have Geolandars in 205/70, out of the two the Geolandar was more of a road tyre with good off-road, but the Dynapros were possibly slightly better off road and about the same on road. There are plenty of other good tyres in 205/70, butmy experience is limited to Hankooks, Geolandar and of course Duellers (which is what came on the vehicle).

The Maxxis and BFGs are probably much better off road, on road, I don't really notice much difference to the Hancook or Geolandar, but I am sure they will be slightly more noisy and ride probably isn't quite as good.

I spend most of my time on road, but still like the look of the Maxxis and especially the performance when off road.

I'll put another vote for the Maxxis Wormdrives. I have them fitted to two vehicles, one being my Jimny and I've done maybe 15,000 miles on them. My brother has the BFG KO2s on his 90. I like them too, but I can't see where the extra money is. If I was buying again I'd still go for the Wormdrives, even if the BFGs cost the same.

Are both of these tires suited to the standard 5.5Jx15 ET5 rims??

Yes. 215 is the widest tyre they recommend for 5.5 wheels, I believe.

I confirm 215/75 will fit standard wheels and clear the wheel arches.
