oil filter/mains rattle query was created by dafyddcoch
Hi all. Our 2022 M!£A engined jimny has done around 123k.and has been well maintained. However, after the last oil-change, at which I used a Bosch oil filter, and 10/40 semi syn. oil, I have the dreaded mains rattle for a nano-second upon startup. Coincidence? Or, do some oil-filters still not have the shut-off valve in them. Should I try a genuine filter? If the mains are now wearing, I guess I'm in for an expensive bill as at that mileage, we may as well have a full crank re-grind do the big ends as well. But of course, we may as well stick a set of rings in and overhaul the head at the same time but I don't have the facilities or the health to do that anymore. Anyone know a friendly Suzuki bod in North Wales?

I've never heard of a shut off valve in a Jimny oil filter. I use whatever filter is cheapest on eBay and have had no such issues. How do you know it's the main bearings rattling? I wouldn't expect any major wear at that mileage, however replacement engines are around £150 and readily available so it's not an expensive fix.

Hi and thanks for you response.
"How do you know it's the main bearings rattling?"
Usual symptom of short rattle upon starting and nano-second delay in oil light going out. Big ends knock, mains rattle. etc etc.
Thanks again

It's generally referred to as an "anti-drain-back" valve and usually takes the form of a rubber ring visible through the six holes that form the inlet to the filter.
Like you I would not expect the engine in a 2022 Jimny to have enough wear for the mains or the timing chain to rattle, but, since a 2022 Jimny would/should have a K15 engine, not an M!£A, I'm wondering if there is more than one typo in there.
Typically there is enough residual oil in the mains & big ends to allow for a start up without rattle, I can drain & refill the oil on pretty much any of my Suzukis and there is no rattle for the several seconds it takes to refill the filter, so that engine would have to have some significant wear.

Whilst it's not impossible for a 2002 M13a to have enough clearance in the mains for them to rattle, I think it's more likely for it to be the timing chain - if you're curious about it, hook an oil pressure gauge to the port and see what the pressure looks like at 4000 rpm with the engine warm, it should be between 39.8 & 61.1 psi, the lower it is, the more clearance in the mains.
