I should have done what Scimike said, but didn't! Bought a full axle to just replace the lot (got delayed and didn't check it for a month or so - was actually a load of garbage - bought from a breaker on Facebook). Got local garage to strip my axle, and they confirmed it was the bearings.
The abs sensor is not an interference fit but it is very close so it's possible to rust or debris could make a noise but it should run quietly. It is possible to hear the sun wheels walking over each other but it's really feint and more like a soft clunk than a clicking noise.
