also is the jimny a front axle disconect system?

No idea on the first question, very likely one is American English for the other though.

The Jimny is not a front axle disconnect system, these are fitted to Jeeps.

Basically, the longer driveshaft is split into 2 pieces with a vacuum actuator on the axle to slide a locking ring along to join them. In 2wd the diff stops turning and the unbroken driveshaft spins the little spider gears to wear them out.

Can't see why you can't use free wheel hubs with that system though, they are not necessary, but wouldn't hurt anything, in fact, I'd likely jam the actuator into lock and use freewheel hubs.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
