This form of maintenance seems to be an old fashioned idea now. I was taught to use Girling rubber grease (bright red it was), great stuff. Any petroleum based product will weaken rubber in the end and silicone can cause separation in bushes, etc. To my knowledge current thinking is to let rubber have its life and then replace.

It's like the tyre dressing sprays many contain substances that shorten your tyres lifespan causing cracks and potentially bead leaks. I would save the money on treating them to go on replacement especially on things like window and door seals.

Funny you should mention this, just got this product on recommendation from the detailing site, got it for the Jim and my mini yet to get round to use it but it's on the list in the next couple of weeks :)

If it's an oil seal then red rubber grease.

If it's an external seal such as a window seal the 303 Aerospace protectant

When the window rubbers on mine go green and the moss starts budding I clean it out with an old toothbrush, or scrubbing brush if I can find it. The rubbers lasted 18 years on the old one......:)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
