Wow! So how do they think it's managed to do that then?

They don't know and I can't afford to pay them to find out. This is the sad thing about cars now. They are just written off. I've an old transit van needing some tlc. Think I'll put that back on the road instead.

This is the end of Easter week and maybe a good time to report that the dead Jimny has been resurrected! After the Suzuki dealer gave me the bad news that the timing had gone wrong and the engine was a write off I had it towed by a local garage recommended by a friend. He initially suspected a broken camshaft. But after taking a look inside he discovered that a timing chain sprocket had become loose and broken off the shaft resulting in engine failure including 15 bent valves. The symptom of this was every two-three weeks the car would struggle to fire up, I assume because the loose sprocket was not timing the engine correctly. To cut a long story short I was helped by a local breakers yard who provided me with a replacement engine (17,000 miles on the clock). This was expertly fitted this week by the garage and the Jimny is back from the dead. Thanks to everyone and martin for helping me with suggestions and spare parts. The fellas who fitted my new engine had also dropped a new engine into a Suzuki Vitara the week before - it did have a broken camshaft - so I've made a good contact there and they are willing to stand over all the work done. Just running the replacement engine in over the next week or so, so far coolant and oil levels are perfect and she's running like new again.

This is excellent news. Well done for persisting with it!

It's always nice to hear of a successful outcome.

I read this for the first time this morning and was thinking it's a timing issue, which can only really be caused by an issue with the timing chain but they're usually not problematic.

Sorry, if I'd read it when the thread was new I'd have told you to take the cam cover off to check it.

It's a bit worrying that a local garage and a dealer struggled to solve it.

Thanks everyone. The engine is running perfect. All fluid levels are correct. The air con system isn't working. I'll get it checked by a specialist soon - it's not a big deal. I'm using slightly more fuel than before - not sure if this is important? A question for you - where is the engine number located on a Jimny engine - need to update the V5 at some point. Thanks.

engine number is stamped on the exhaust side bell housing
