Help! My 99 jimny blew all its water out thru a bust water pump gasket back at the end of July. I realised it had overheated and cut the engine before it could seize. It's been sat at home for a few months waiting to get round to fixing it. It has been run post overheating but prior to sorting out the gasket. The gasket is now fixed but she won't fire up. Battery is charged, engine turns over but even with a good dollop of "start ya bstrd" through the air filter will not fire. There is no water visible in the oil and as stated it has been run post the overheat so compression should not be the problem. The husband marked the cam belt and zip tied it in place when he did the gasket so that should not have moved. I'm thinking it may be a fuel problem as the petrol has been sat in the tank a few months but I wouldn't have thought it would have gone off that badly? Any suggestions? Need it back on the road soon as. G13b engine japanese import "new zealand new"( way back in 99 anyway).

Is the engine free to rotate? Does it try to start and then not run? When the head was put back on were all the sensors and senders connected?

Engine turns over but doesn't fire. It has been started once , just long enough to get it in the garage but that was several months ago. The head was not removed, all that has been done is to replace the water pump gasket.

First off recheck the timing properly. Second use a spark plug to check for ignition. That is take one out of a cylinder and connect it to a plug lead and put the body of the spark plug on the engine. Use a piece of wood to hold it in place and get somebody to turn the engine over. Watch for a spark at the plugs business end. If it sparks and you are using eeze start and there is compression and the timing is correct then it will fire when the plug is replaced. When you check the timing you need to align the lower pulley marks and the camshaft marks when the no 1 piston is at TDC. If it is then turn the crankshaft pulley by hand for two complete revolutions and recheck the marks. They should again line up on their datums. Ensure you tension the cambelt correctly.
