Well the OP said he can't afford the very expensive quotes he's had, not that he can't afford a new head unit. They're not that expensive in Halfords.

Possibly they don't feel competent to fit their own head units hence the quotes?
To you and I throwing in a new head unit might be simple but other people have no knowledge whatsover so baulk at DIY.
Even a basic simple radio only double din unit with an input can be had for under £100 and the single din even cheaper.
