Need Help - Head Gasket v's crack in block was created by Chris the Phys
Hi all (This may be a silly Q?) - I need a little bit of advice please - this there a test/way to find out if the head gasket as gone or there is a crack to the block?
The reason is I was thinking about buying another jimmy and my son and I doing it up as a project - therefore need to know it I need to do the gasket or replace the engine?
Thanks in advance

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

There is a "sniffer" test that checks for hydrocarbons in the water, which will tell you if there is a crack from inside the cylinder to the waterways, which is normally head, or headgasket.
Unless the engine has frozen in the winter the block won't be cracked, and you would see where the water had been coming out if it was.
You could have a warped head, or a cracked head to go with the headgasket though.

The seller says that the Jimny has been sitting around for the last 18 months, when he got the vehicle the seller said that it had no anti freeze !!! however I show the jimmy yesterday and it started 1st time and I didn't see any water leak.
Am I right in thinking a cracked engine means a replacement one?

Depends where the crack is. An engine shop may be able to weld an external crack. What year/engine is the jimny?Chris the Phys wrote: The seller says that the Jimny has been sitting around for the last 18 months, when he got the vehicle the seller said that it had no anti freeze !!! however I show the jimmy yesterday and it started 1st time and I didn't see any water leak.
