my jimnys engine has been getting worse over time, i think ive finially managed to kill it tonight, so im now looking for a small diesel engine to fit,

i know of one set up i can use, but its hard to get the parts,

the one i know of is a vauxhall izuzu 1.7 or 1.5td mounted to a opel manta gearbox, i can get the engine no problem but cant get a gearbox,

what othere easy options are there?

I don't know about "easy" options but you would be a bit of a "Jimny Hero" if you fitted the Renault 1.5 Diesel as this is the engine fitted to the European Diesel Jimnys. Mechanically you would probably need the engine mounts and bell-housing from a Diesel Jimny which you can get from UK Suzuki parts or try from a European scrapyard, under the German scrappage scheme I understand the car part scrap yards are full of parts.

The real problem would be around the electronic controls. It is probably unrealistic to fit a Diesel Jimny loom and RCU so you would probably have to mix and match.

Would make a great write up for here!

Im trying to keep the eletrics nice and simple,

modifiying the engine bay loom wont be a problem, ive alread modefied the entire loom to the back end, in total i reckon ive got rid of 2 or 3 dozen wires, the standard wiring in a jimny has been way over complicated

engine wise i just need something simple,

I've heard of people putting the 1.7 izuzu/vauxhall engine in Jimneys before but never really thought about what gearbox you would need. There must be another box you can use with that engine as Opel Manta parts are hard to come by! I will be considering a 1.7 diesel for when my engine goes pop as I can get bits cheaper through work!:) Also depending which ecu I end up using I should be able to use works diagnostic equipment to talk to it!

I've also heard of a guy locally who is running a VW 1.8 turbo in his Jimny but I have no more details so have no idea how it fits or what box he is using.

There is a company in the States that does a conversion for the Golf 1.9 diesel. They recommend a pre 1998 engine as the electrics are more basic.

True its a straight swap, but still petrol,

ive decided to chop up a spare toyota hilux me and my mate has, im going to fit either a 1.7td or 1.9td engine along with a suitable gearbox and transfer box, then put the hilux axles under it, will take some time, but ill get there in the end.

Fair Doo's I like the idea of a Diesel Jimny, but not having the fabrication skills... I doubt its gonna happen.

im rubbish at fabrications, but im fantastic with a measuring tape, pencil and paper lol

ive got a mate who works in a metal merchants, i get my metal super cheap from him and he cuts it to the size i need, its then just a case of me welding bits together and fitting them.

What size liana fits straight in if you dont mind me asking. This may be something worth considering in the future altho I would prefer to convert to diesel. What fuel rail do you need to put on the liana engine?
