A bit of a vague title sorry. I'm wondering how the factory Jimny side steps should be fitted.

I have the chrome side bars, with fittings, the rear fitting is a bit like a round scaffold clamp and clamps to a steel tube perpendicular to the chassis and then the side bar is secured with 2 small bolts down onto it.

The other end puzzles me a bit. It's an L shape which looks like it should snug nicely onto the chassis. It has a single hole that lines up with hollow round tube that runs from driver to passenger side and supports the rear of the gearbox.

This tube sits slightly proud on my chassis, so this nice L shape can't actually sit snug against the chassis. And secondly, the chassis tube is hollow, there is no tapped insert to bolt to?

I'm wondering if on newer chassis this cross stiffening tube is flush and features a tapped hole, or just appears flat with a tapped hole ready to bolt to??

Any help or advice would be great, my current thinking is I'll grind flush that cross bar, and weld a tapped disk on the ends to blank it off - I just thought I'd ask on here before I get giddy with the grinder! :woohoo:

If it's the front mount your talking about there's a kind of a giant rawl plug that fits into the side of the chassis but is quite hard to remove so it's probably been left on the car that the side steps were removed from.
Your best bet is to weld the bracket to the chassis

The 'giant rawlplug' is called a cone washer, and mates with a solid cone of almost identical size, plus, from memory, M12 bolts of the appropriate length.
Can't remember the exact size but I recently replaced all these for the_goshawker, he may be able to help you better than I can!

Thank you very much, that's about what I suspect initially but I was thrown by the fact that my "round tube" sits proud thus the steel plate can't sit flat against the chassis.

I think I'll weld bit of flat steel bar across the hole and drill and tap it - the job's done in no time then.

The steps look like they're not just for show, these are pretty heavy duty brackets!

Hi, I am new to the forum .. And Jimny's. Just bought a Jimny for our daughter and decide to put on some second hand 'sports side bars' . . Now run into the same problem another member had , the front mount fits over a tube section in the chassis , and the seller didn't send me the old fixing, which I understand from other forum threads, is like a large Rawlbolt.
Has anyone got a picture of the fixing or know of a supplier of such a part ? I thought the side bars were genuine Suzuki parts but chatting to local dealer they are not too sure.
Any help or advice most welcome. Thanks

Hello, Mike

It's the REAR mount which fits over the chassis tube....the front mount fits INSIDE the chassis tube.
You need to measure the precise inside diameter of the chassis tube, and purchase 2 x cone washers of the appropriate size.
These comprise 2 parts + the M12 x 80mm bolts....give me a couple of hours and I'll post a sketch.... ;)

Gus :)
