tyre weld v spare wheel? was created by jimnylee
Hi folks , I have been thinking that instead of humping around a full size spare on the tailgate why not take it off and keep a tin of holts tyre weld in the glove box? Does anyone else do this ,or have ever used one of these cans? If so I take it they are up to the job?

I use some ultra seal stuff in my motorbike, that seems to work ok, and they do a bigger bottle for cars, but never used the foam stuff.
Why do you want rid of the spare then?

If you gash or tear a sidewall you are going to look awful silly sitting on the side of the road. That gunk is only useful for punctures and a puncture repair kit is more useful than the gunk.
Tearing or gashing the sidewall is probably the most common injury to tyres operating off-road as I well know :S
Keep the spare mate :silly:

Hi folks thanks for the feed back , perhaps I should have been a bit more clearer , I would only take the wheel off the back for road use and have the repair can in the glove box ,and then when I plan any off road excursions I would pop it back on before hand, just think it would be a bit less weight to hump about ? and would have the can for normal road punctures?

Complete waste of money:
1. They do not repair the majority of punctures (confirmed by AA man who turned up to my failed repair)
2. The tyre cannot be repaired after they have been "repaired" by this stuff, the tyre has to be thrown away (read the warning on the tin and also ask at a tyre centre)

My Father got a nail through his tyre and the sealant that was supplied instead of a spare tyre just oozed out through the hole. The AA were called out and put a plug in the tyre which was enough to fix it until he got to a tyre shop to get a replacement tyre. You can get kits with the plugs for DIY use, I know that motorcycle dealers sell them, I would imagine that they are available from auto factors as well.
