So recently got the bug for off roading. and the bug to buy a Jimny.
And as of yesterday that happened. purchased a 2004 jimny mode. standard to the bone with 50k miles.
So my question is. What should I be doing first.
I want to know the car is solid before pushing it off road and modifying it to suit.
Anything common I should put some attention in too?
Thanks in advance!

not entirely sure what your asking?!
rust in the boot and jack well aswell as behind the headlights is probably the most common issue along with kingpin bearings.
what sort of offroading are you planning on doing? take the jim out and give it a go in its standard form on the terrain youll be driving (make sure you have someone to recover you in case you get stuck), this will give you a better idea of what YOU need in the way of mods.
mines unlifted with mud tyres, under armour, breathers and a snorkel and it copes very well with greenlaning!
decent suitable tyres are probably the best mod for offroading.

Thanks for the reply.
wondered if theres common faults I should be looking at and correcting.
But Looking to off road maybe some laning and pay and play days.
Dont want to destroy the car in doing so.
I think I'll buy a spare set of wheels and tyres for on and off road sets.

when it comes to green laning you shouldnt need an extremely modified vehicle as they are roads at the end of the day and most are maintained, suitable tyres and a sensible driving line will get you through most lanes.
IMO under body protection (transfer box guard, radius arm guards, rear shock mount guards) are the most important things to buy first, these will stop you damaging the most vulnerable parts underneath when you get overly adventurous. the main issue is low ground clearance, slightly larger tyres gives you a bit more clearance but for real gains you need BIG tyres which means the gearing will be wrong so a rocklobster is needed aswell as a suitable suspension/body lift, soon gets very expensive!!
pay and play sites tend to be alot more severe than laning but then you should only drive to your and your vehicles capabilities. a stock jim will still work at pay and plays but you wont be able to "go" where the heavily modded trucks go so bare this in mind and dont just blindly follow other people always get out and have a look.
your best bet is to try your local lanes in your standard jimjam to see how it performs, i think alot of people rush into mods that are not needed for the terrain they drive just because everyone else has them. why fit a 3inch lift at vast expense if you dont need it.
search my name on youtube i have a fair few laning videos on there in my standard(ish) jimjam, will give you an idea of what your can do (bare in mind i run mud tyres).
sorry for the essay lol.

And if you want to see how a Jimny with road tyres copes then you can see some videos of me driving some of the lanes in Surrey via this page here

Bear in mind I did get stuck once when I got beached as ground clearance is a little tight (Ride Lane video), but other than that I have not had issues with road tyres not having enough grip in thick mud. I do have under body protection which is important as jonesy says.
