Handbrake light stays on.

I bought a second Jimny that came with this problem already present, and now it's started to happen to my first Jimny.

When the handbrake is released, the warning light on the dash does not go out. It dims slightly. Sometimes you can get it to go out by turning the ignition key back very slightly, without stopping the engine.

What's going on ladies and gents?

have you checked the brake fluid level?think it doubles as a warning of low fluid.

Check your pads too. If they are very worn then that will cause your brake fluid level to be low as the fluid takes up the space.

The handbrake light doubles as the brake fluid level warning indicator.

+1.

i suspect you need new front pads, a fluid top up will get the light off tho if you dont want to replace the pads yet.

Mine does this. I found that twiddling the ignition key by a very small amount causes the light to go out.

My J has practically new brakes all round so its not that causing it. Must be a bad earth.

the brake warning light serves both the handbrake and also the fluid level.. try this:

1. Disconnect connector from brake fluid reservoir - if problem goes you have a faulty sensor or fluid level problem

if problem persists

2. Disconnect connector from handbrake - If the problem goes the switch is the likely culprit
3. short the two connectors in the plug - if the brake light comes on on the dashboard then the wiring is fine and the switch is definitely the cause (give it a spray with WD-40 as it might be wet).

If its still not working then its either the ignition switch or ABS if you have it fitted.

from the manual

Cheers for all the replies. The fluid level, brake pads etc are fine so I'll follow yellowstreak's advice and see what comes up.

AS Mark says, it can be the ignition switch

Yellostreak's diagram shows a connection to the ignition switch that earths the bulb out when in the starter position (probably a bulb test) the VR coloured wire on the left (violet with red trace?)

If disconnecting the handbrake switch and the reservoir switch don't work, disconnect that wire from the ignition switch (I don't know if anything else connects to it that isn't in the diagram though)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
