SJ/Jimny rear diff compatability was created by Jimny J
Evening all. Just a quick question. Are SJ rear diff compatible with a jimny? My rear diff really has seen better days, and I've been offered a SJ rear. They look the same on the outside, but I'm just wondering if the ratios may be different? The Jim in question is a 2000, not sure on the SJ as its just a diff...

Not 100% sure, but there's something to it.

I know that the Lockright difflocker that fits the Jimny rear diff, also fits a Samurai diff. But not sure if the Samurai diff is the same a SJ diff.

Why not just give it a try?
if it doesn't fit, the diff is already disassembled, so it's just finding a used Jimny diff and install :)

the 413/samuria rear diff does fit in the jimny rear axel but you would have to check if you can get 1 with the right ratio as you can't fit a sj front diff in jimny front axel

If your Jimny is manual and pre 2005, it should have a diff ratio of3.9. Most Samurais have a ratio of 3.7, however some of the Japanese cars had a ratio of 3.9. The only way to be sure is to count the number of teeth on the crown wheel , and divide it by the number of teeth on the pinion. If your Jimny is an auto the diff ratio is 4.01 and if a vvt it is 4.3.
