So does the prop actually need inward movement then? or does it (no mater if the axle is going up or down) just extend?

you should have some inward movement on the prop not alot prob about 15mm or so would do

Yep id say you need abit of play, i had this with my rear prop, was off a 410 an not a 413, an when i went offroading if i put my hand on the transfer box lever i could feel it moving as i drove through the ruts.
