Took the car to the garage yesterday . When he took it apart the spigot bearing was worn away. Never heard that before. He is having an engineer, he knows, turn one up. Plenty of life left on old clutch but he is changing it as well.
Anyone else heard of this??

He is turning up a new spigot bearing??? How does he propose to do that??? It's a small bearing ins the centre of the flywheel that a puller willpull out and a new one will push in quite easily.
The noise most certainly is the thrust bearing or the clutch release bearing - same thing but we all call it one or t'other. Mine was making it until recently and is caused by lack of use. Now I've been making a point of using the car more often, it no longer makes the noise.
Byhim putting a new clutch on the car, the 3 part clutch kit includes a new release bearing and the noise will go away.
Make sure you are not being given a load of old flannel about a spigot bearing as there is nothing to turn up!
It may be that the spigot bearing has some play but it must be a cheap part to replace both in terms of the part and it's labour!
In respect of the pedal travel being different - how quickly has this happened? If very quickly in terms of the car not being driven much before it changed, I wonder if the cable is snapping and is down to it's last few threads, so not pushing the clutch away as much as before but enough to change gear ok.
It has some adjustment by lifting off a little plastic flap on the bottom of the gearbox and turning a plastic piece round. Fitting a new cable is easy enough and they can be got as a pattern part.
These are my thoughts anyway - I am not the oracle when it comes to clutches though, so perhaps someone who is a mechnic by trade on here can clarify if my thoughts are right.
I don't want you being had over though mate!
