Hmm... I thought the chain was used to drive just the front, and power to the rear was transfered through gears, so there shouldn't be any chains slipping when in 2wd...

The chain carries the drive from the upper propshaft (gearbox input) to the lower propshafts (F&R axles), so it is used all the time (2wd/4wd/low doesn't matter)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
