If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

What does it smell like?
Might be worth sniffing round the fanbelt and alternator (when the engine is stopped)
A nasty bad egg smell from the battery means the alternator is overcharging.
Mine smells of baking paint from when I tried to daub over the rusty sump when it gets hot.
