Most of the time front facing but if its raining or dusty just spin it round ,
I dont see any ram air advantage that some may claim with it facing forwards though

Just point it forward like it's meant to be, because there's absolutely no reason to face it backwards. If there's dust, it will find it's way into air filter no matter what. And if it's raining the water won't go all the way down into the engine, and even if it somehow manages to get up there the amount would be so little that it wouldn't do any harm. They actually use water to clean carbon build up in engines by pouring it slowly into the intake while the engine runs.

But if anything(dust, bugs, pine cones, squirrels etc) gets sucked into the snorkel, it will be stopped by the filter, so who cares what goes in!
EDIT: I haven't fitted a snorkel on my Jimny yet, but as far as I know there's only a little drain hole in the air filter box that needs to be sealed up somehow.

Yeah, seal up the little drain hole in the bottom of the airbox. I also put silicone around the seal where the snorkle enters the airbox through the inner wing.
