Difflock Evolution 2 gearbox oil was created by v8dougie
Anyone used it? Here is the link

The box is difficult to get into 1st unless stationary. Other gears are troublesome sometimes as well and the misses is complaining. I changed the oil last year and it looked old. Stuck in 75w90 AP4 but after a few hundred miles these probs started to occur.

Any help appreciated!

Generally Jimjams don't like first until it has stopped, so that's not a fault, just the way it is. Their gearboxes are pretty reliable usually, are you sure your clutch is good or properly adjusted?

Thanks Kirkynut.

The gear issues are noticeably worse when the car is cold, so thinking it is more than just "the norm", also the car is just about to clock 100k so there must be some wear!

The clutch is okay. It is certainly towards the end of its life as it is very high on the pedal. Did not realise they could be adjusted. Assume there will be some info on that on here somewhere but you got any pointers for me?

Guessing as well you have no view on the oil, other than maybe it is not necessary!

Adjusting the clutch is fairly easy.

Climb underneath and look at the bell housing, if you look at the very front you will see where the clutch cable enters the housing. There is a plastic nut on a thread, that needs to be loosened in your case.

This is covered in the service manual.

There is also some adjustment in the pedal… but its near impossible to get to

Thought I would update in case people were following the thread...

I took the plunge and bought 2 litres of Evo 2 gear oil from Difflock. Warmed up the box, drained the oil and refilled to the correct level. Interestingly I only managed to get 1.5litres in when the capacity should be 1.7litres, not a great amount, but a fair percentage of old oil must still be in there somewhere.

The verdict, definitely better! Noticeably less notchy into all gears, in comparison with before it feels like the box is stiffer, but in actual fact it is more like a normal (or newer) gearbox, if that makes sense, a more positive action.

First gear is just as easy to select when cold as when it is warm now, so that is good. And it even allows you to select 1st when rolling, which was always a no no before.

Sometimes going from a forward gear to reverse took a couple of attempts, but now smooth as anything and first time every time.

The misses even said it was better, after asking her!

I must state that my gearbox was in no way falling apart, I coped with it very well before as I am used to slightly difficult boxes on my Austin Mini and Series Land Rover, but I was aware of myself declutching and attempting gears a couple of times to allow it to go in easily, the wife did not do that and simply pushed HARD until the gear appeared, don't think that would have helped wear! None of this is now necessary.

FYI I do not work for nor have any connection with Difflock or their associated products, I have however used the Evolution 1 in my fathers Discovery R380 gearbox which had the crunching 2nd gear syncro, and it solved that, so thought it was worth a shot.

In summary, well impressed and very much worth the £35 odd for the oil, assuming it lasts a year at least!

Cheers all

Phil

I might give that oil a go, as mine always struggles to get into Reverse (takes a couples of 'shoves') from Forward gears...

Jalapeño, IISY?
