Very loud grinding noise from o/s/r wheel. was created by r7ynp1988
Hi there
about a week ago I noticed a slight grinding noise from the o/s/r wheel when driving the noise has started to get alot louder. There are no leaks around the drum but the wheel has slight up and down freeplay any ideas ??? I was thinking wheel bearing but not 100%.
Thanks
Ryan.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Other possibilities
Mud in the brake drum?
Worn out brake shoes?
Bearing so gone that the drum is rubbing on the backplate?
If the wheel moves up and down the wheel bearing is gone, in and out a very tiny amount is normal.

Black Jimny's don't get stuck!

While driving pull the handbrake up to bind, if the noise goes away it could be the bearing but as above any movement will show its shot.
Could be worn out shoes, if they're really low they don't return properly and bind against the drum.
