Hi there,
I would look at doing a second alternator of high output, I have been told by members of my club that some Mondeo alternators are of quite a high output.
I would run it as a seperate entity from the vehicle's charging battery and not mess about with split charging etc.
The difficulty lies in making up brackets and choosing the right belt for when you have your chosen alternator. You might need to put a different pulley on the alternator you choose too.
Then your starting battery is always OK and only needs to be small and you can have several large winch batteries then.
The only place I can think of you mounting the second alternator would be on the off side of the engine but it would need to be high enough away from the exhust manifold to not be effected by it's heat.
I attend a fair few winch challenges as a spectator and follow many of my club members around to watch them as we have a local series called the Mission 4x4 Winch Challenge Series and pay alot of interest into the build of the trucks etc.
I have often thought about a proper full on trayback Winch Challenge Jimny with three winches and have been caught looking at mine with angle grinders in my eyes on many occasions!!!
Have you built your motor yet? If not, culd you do a blog of it, either here or difflock or both - if you've not done so already - if you have can you put a link on here - otherwise I'd love to see lots of piccies of it!!!

Hey all it's not built yet all i have fitted is a 4.5in suspension lift from ORA and a 2 inch body lift from ORA. just getting round to phoning up rob storr to get a 6:1 rock lobster t case today.
but i will try to keep updating people if they wish. what is the general rule for doing this?
More to the point of this post im still unsure what to do about the situation of alternators. someone on difflock has posted saying that someone fitted transit alternator but im struggling to find it. so what year transit would i need and my jimny is a spanish 2001 i think its the G13BB engine but im not to sure. but one thing i am fairly sure about and thats that a 60 or 70 amp alternator is not man enough for three winches
cheers for the help so far guys

On the subject of alternators, I've fitted a second battery (Numax)in the engine bay and wired in parallel with the original though a 200A relay. The switch live to the relay is an ignition live (cigarette lighter) through a switch on the dash.
When I close the relay there's a notable extra load on the alternator as the revs drop and belt starts to slip. From various forums I have read of others who have done this and thought that you couldn't "overload" the alternator as it can only ever output it's maximum. Do I need to upgrade the alternator or just tighten the belt!
I remember quite a few years ago when I fitted a pair of 100w KC Daylighters to my standard (dynamo + positive earth) series 2A.
The first time I switched them on the dynamo sprayed the inside of the engine bay with solder and that was the end of that!
