Sorry i posted in the wrong page.
Has anyone had overheating problems that have not been caused by a choked radiator? I have found at a point to point/orienteering meeting and on Saturday during a drive through a local forrest that my temp guage goes right up and the engine bay heats up to a point where I nearly burnt my fingers on the bonnet stay!I was just driving up and down some steep hills in low box, when I stalled the engine wouldn't restart till I left the bonnet open to let it cool down. There are no leaks, no water/oil contamination and no mud in the radiator. I have taken the rubber strip off the top of the bulkhead at the trailing edge of the bonnet as there was no obvious vent for the hot air but this doesn't seem to have made much difference, any ideas??
Thanks,
John.

I hope you didn't use it in low box on a hard surface like tarmac in 4WD low for too far or you get terrible transmission wind up owing to the lack of a centre diff and blow a part of your transmission!
Driving in low box at any speed for any length of time, especially up hill would cause the engine to rev high with not alot of air passing through the rad as you couldn't get that much speed up, and it would get hot.
It could be the viscous fan giving up the ghost. Martin has locked his after it slipped. I can't remember how he did it. I'm not sure if he wedged card or something in the mechanism or something similar.

As Kirkynut says, I had a similar problem. The viscous fan had failed. As a temporary fix I "locked" the fan to the hub using cable ties (a fiddly task). Once proved I took the viscous mechanism apart and jammed it full of cardboard. Now my fan runs all the time (sounding a bit like an aeroplane) but it stays cool.
