Easiest test is to go outside first thing in the morning and undo the radiator cap. (Not the expansion bottle)
If you hear a hiss, the head gasket is leaking.

If the smoke is more blue, as in oil burning, it will be valve oil seals, or something blocked in the breather system.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Tom,

Yes there is test equiptment to test like you have said, but from my many years experience in the motor trade it is not always accurate. If it indacates that the coolant system had combustion gases in then great, but if it say it has not, then its abit  i have had cylinder head gaskets leaking before and the this described method has failed to picl it up.

Cylinder leakge test is the only way to be 100% sure.

Steve.

WHAT !? Its not uncomon for the cooling system to maintain some pressure over night, and thus will hiss when you undo the radiator cap. This is probally the most crazy method of cylinder head diagnoses i have ever heared.
