hi guys, just had to go out and disconect the battery on the jimny, found the winch trying to go in out-in out,any ideas? it is raining realy bad here could that cause the problem before i disconected the battery i pressed the winch control button and it stopped, then i sprayed WD40 around the terminals on the winch and it tried again, maybe i should just fit an isolator switch to isolate the winch

i think an isolator behind the bonnet is a good idea anyway but best to sort the issue out. sounds like a short.

If the solenoid box isn't sealed then water ingress will be a problem. Its a good idea to move the box to under the bonnet

Yes, sounds like water has got into something and sent it crazy. Invest in an allbright contactor and bin your one and locate it under the bonnet. Winch solutions sell an extention kit for the motor wires and I found the easiest thing to do is to invest in a remote if you don't have one rather than muck about with a wonder lead.

I have also hard wired an in/out switch on the dash.

You must have an isolator though! Again can be purchased through winch solutions.

Have a look at Martin's how to guide or blog to see what he has done as you are wanting to do the same but with a new contactor as the old one has got water in it. With an allbright you'll not need to put it in a watertight box though as it is watertight enough. I've seen them mounted above a winch motor on challenge trucks, Gigglepin stylee and dunked under water with no issues, but under the bonnet is better!

A proper allbright can be got from Devon 4x4, you only need a standard allbright, not a heavy duty one.
