My New Front Recovery Set-up was created by goatboy
Over the long weekend I decided it was time to address my lack of recovery points.
Now I didn’t want a different bumper and I didn’t really want 2 big chunks of steel protruding from the bumper all the time so I set about making a removable system.
I bought some heavy duty lifting eyes off ebay SWL rated to 2.5t and with an M24 thread about 20cm long they are very heavy duty.
So I added some steel tube, some angle iron and some welding to come up with my now fitted system
First thing, take off the bumper. Surprisingly clean and rust free
I cut away half of the mount for the front bumper and put some slots in the body mounts to slide my angle iron through. Some very rather awkward welding directly to chassis legs and body mounts and everything is firmly in place
On the drivers side the chassis leg isn’t nice and flat like it is on the passenger side so there is less to weld to. I welded where I could and added a 16mm bolt drilled and tapped right through the angle iron and both sides if the chasis. I think the weld would have been sufficient on its own but I feel more comfortable with a big bolt in there as well.
Test fit of the lifting eyes
All looks good so a coat of zinc primer followed by lashings and lashings of under sealant.
Bumper back on, drill some holes for the eyes to go through and then screw them in.
Check the shackles fit on…
All good!
Next job, fit towbar on the rear…
