I get a machine gun type noise from time to time but always whilst driving along and in 2H. It usually starts if I hit a bump/pot hole in the road then the sound goes away as soon as I engage 4H or slow down.

Its only intermittent so I haven't bothered to try find the fault, but my first thought was one of the hubs does not fully unlock and maybe sliding towards, and trying to engage, the drive shaft splines. As the drive shaft is stationary when in 2H but starts to rotate when you put it into 4H this would enplane how I get the noise in 2H but not 4H.

Any thoughts?

i have a similar noise and have and now also put it down to the hubs. dont think its the noise they have described with the chain though.
now bought manual hubs and hopefully this will be cured.
my noise is exactly as yours, brought on going over a bump and will go itself as i speed up. never get it on pulling away.

just to confirm , fitted manual hubs - no scraping noise any more. mine must have been the vac hubs not completely disengaging.

Did you check to see if the hub vac pipes were still connected or still intact?

Thanks for letting us know mate.
