Hot start issues - dieing battery was created by goatboy
OK so slightly strange one.
I've had this issue twice now and I just wanted to check the collective wisdom here before I go spend some cash.

So Jimny will be up to operating temperarture and I either stall or the engine cuts out (hard to say if it was my fault in both occasions).

Then the engine won't start, it acts like I've got a dead battery turning over very slowly...

First time it happened I had a jump pack with me, connected it up and started straight away and was fine (even stopping and starting it again 10 minutes later).

2nd time I didn't have the jump pack, left it a couple of minutes and it seemed to be a bit better but not starting, couple more minutes a bit better again, and so on for about 5 times when it eventually started.

First time I assumed it must just be the battery on its last legs and thought nothing more of it.

2nd time is a bit more strange, it got better as it cooled and eventually started. If it was the battery I would have thought the amount of times I tried and failed to start it would have killed it for good but it eventually started anyway.

I guess it could be a dodgy starter and the extra oomph from the started pack just overcame any issues, could be the battery dieing and it doesn't like it when it gets hot (which seems a bit odd as the battery wouldn't be that hot anyway), or it could be a duff sensor (but would that make it turn over slowly?)

Anybody had similar issues?

Wow thats a long post

As you say a bit of a strange one which is prob why no one has jumped in!
My thoughts:
1 Intermittent faults -very hard to solve!
2 Battery is probably OK as it is working most of the time, you could nip into a battery spot and ask them to whack a battery tester on it and that would prove it is sound or other wise
3 Check all wires on starting system -particularly earths and connections onto starter- anintermittent fault on this side of things would certainly give problem you describe
4 clean all terminals up so they are like brand new.

If none of this solves it come back in 2 weeks as the Dr says!

Cheers Mike,
Earth straps always a good thing to check so I'll do that, I'll check wiring to the starter motor too.
I don't drive it very often so not sure when it will happen again. Rather irritating when does happen, hope it doesn't do it in the middle of a roundabout or something...

Dead cell in the battery? Gets enough in it to start first off then until the alternator is charging, the car is taking more out than the alternator is putting in?

Black Jimny's don't get stuck!

Thats what I thought first time it happneded, but the 2nd time even though I kept cranking it over the battery still had enough charge to start the car once it had cooled a bit, suggesting its not the battery. (if that makes sense?)
