Did you get water in the auto box? If so you might just be lucky if you completely drain the box AND torque converter, and for good measure change the filter. Unfortunately the smallest amount of water is very bad news for an auto box, the reason is that the water vaporises as it gets hot producing steam, which damages the clutches.
Good luck

It sounds to me like you've got water in the box. As above, fully drain and change the filter. Fill it with oil and run for a minute or so, selecting each gear in turn on the lever. Stop then leave it over night. Drain a little oil out the bottom. You may see water first then clear oil - in which case just top up. If the oil is emulsified (cloudy pink colour) then empty and repeat the above until you get all the water out.
So long as you deal with the water quickly, it is unlikely to do any lasting harm.
Your symptoms sound like you have emulsified oil between the friction surfaces of the clutches. As above, the friction turns the water to steam and makes the friction surfaces float (a bit like a hovercraft) and not grip.
If you leave it too long, the friction surface rusts which closes the gap between the surfaces and makes all the clutches grip at the same time - effectively selecting all gears simultaneously. This either results in the box jamming or stripping the teeth from the gears - both of which are bad.

I've had a similar problem due to water in my auto box, if I put it into drive it would not actually go into gear and pull away. I drained the fluid & refilled and it has been fine since (fingers crossed). It may have shortened the life of the auto box but I'll probably never know, it works now so I'm pretty pleased. I think I'll follow the advice on here and drop the oil pan and replace the filter too along with more fresh fluid.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

You take off the transmission then pull it out of the front of the bell housing
A non starter really.
In The Olden Days there used to be a drain plug on a torque converter, but nowadays oil lasts for millions of miles so you don't drain it every second Saturday.
You can either
fill with fresh fluid, drive a few miles 'till it is hot, drain fluid and refill.
or
you can flush the fluid, this involves filling the transmission, removing the return line from the oil cooler, directing the fluid that comes out into a suitable container and letting it tick over until it pumps out a lire of fluid. Add a litre, and do it again. do this 4 or 5 times.
According to the manual, you will get 1.4 litres in the sump, but 3.5 litres into a dry gearbox
