Had mine out last weekend to change the wheel bearings. They are held in by the drum back plate which bolts to the axle. Technically they shouldnt be able to fall out. Unless maybe a bearing has collapsed. If he has a rear disc conversion fitted they have a retaining plate which again bolts to the axle.

Hope this helps

As above, they "technically" shouldn't come out. When fitting them you tap(translate to belt/whack) them back in then the back plate bolts on to secure it. After refitting and a few miles i check the nuts. Or again as above the bearing has collapsed

If those nuts were loose or something then with normal driving the shaft could come out of the recess where the bearing sits.

If the rear wheel bearing collapses the entire shaft and wheel can part company from the car.

My mates fell out of his sj. Full wheel, hub and shaft, the 4 bolts for rear disc conversion snapped.

I have been told, although I'm unsure how much I believe it, that if you drive on ruts so that your wheels are continuously being pulled apart for some time, the forces on the bearing and retainer are such that the wheel pushing out can pull the bearing and retainer off the shoulder on the shaft that they are pressed onto.

That would have the same effect.

I watched an episode of the American Top Gear yesterday - rubbish - but nonetheless, they had a Ford Bronco on there which had the same issue. I'm not sure of what the rear bearing set up is on one of those but it must be similar for it to have occurred the way it did.
