Front Airbags only go off if enough force in the reverse direction to the sensor is applied, so front airbags require the right amount of perfectly backwards (a deceleration force for forward airbags) you can hit on the side or roll with any amount over the required force, if its not in the proper direction then airbags will not activate. in a side collision if the front airbags went off it cause more damage to the occupant in the event of a crash.
