I think that we could do with a register with anyone who has tried a scantool to post whether it works or not. I'm trying to investigate this issue, it seems to affect all Suzuki OBD2 models. It did seem that the Elm based scan tools were a fairly safe bet but I have now heard of at least one Elm based tool that doesn't work either.
I really need to borrow a scan tool that doesn't work to pursue this further.

I have just bought the one Martin has, have a look at his article on it. It seems really easy to use and although I have no trouble codes at the moment I am confident it will work as it has done for Martin. They are £91 at the moment! Bet you can't find one cheaper that works!!!

Which model do you have? There is some evidence that early G13BB models may be OBD1.

Now verified. So if you're looking for a scanner first you need to determine if you are OBD1 or OBD2 by checking which pins on the J1962 (OBD2) connector are populated. If possible you should also verify that the populated pins are wired through to the ECU and have 5V on them with the ignition on. It is not unknown for the diagnostic connector to be populated even when the ECU doesn't support that particular protocol.

OBD2 scanners are very easy to find but again may not work. OBD1 scanners are not commonly available, the Tech1 and Carman scanners cost several thousand pounds each. I jave been working on software that allows an ALDL style interface to be used and I will at some point add support for the Jimny.
