Hi this may be a stupid question to some of you. Right I have got a champion winch 6500lb to fit to the jimny but I havnt got a battery so my question is
1) can it be run of my single jimny battery or has it got to have a separate one
2) Iv got no pocket money at the minute so would a forklift battery do the Job???

If you are just going to use the winch for getting yourself out of trouble (or into more trouble!!) then the original battery will be ok if its in good condition. Leave the engine running so that you have the advantage of the alternator helping. If you want to do competitions like challenge events then a bigger deep cycle battery would be better. You can get an Optima yellow top that will fit in the original location if you have a later car with ABS which will preclude you from mounting a bigger battery on the other side of the engine compartment.
Make sure you use a cut out switch for the winch so that you can isolate it.

One thing is the battery. If you're serious about winching consider a 100+ Amp alternator to feed the battery.

I ran my vitara winch on the standard battery and it was fine.
But if you planning on winch up things on purpose and wanting to use it, do what obarno said and put a deep cycle battery on. even more so with the cold weather coming. :)

Crickey, I wouldn't have thought a standard battery would pull the skin off a rice pudding. If it worked it wouldn't be for long!

You do need a decent battery. The highest cch you can get and the highest continuous ah you can get and preferably deep cycle.

Fitting a winch should only be done one way - properly! It ain't cheap though. A battery is part of it. You also need to consider the heavy duty wiring and isolator.

I have done a lot of winching in a day with the standard alternator though but have a large battery - a Numax located in the boot.

If you have 2 batteries wired together they should be of the same type and size or one will be continuously feeding the other and it shall damage them.

Thanks the advice. I would only be using the winch for emergancys and the odd pay & play days nothing major so wasn't wanting to spend a fortune on batteries.

Thanks
