Larger road tyres

Right could somebody suggest some larger tyres which will drop the gearing a bit. Are 15" rims the way to be going? I will NOT be going off road with these so I am happy to be going larger - losing off road abilty with a poorer ratio and of course reducing articulation

I think the largest you want to go to if you do not intend to go off road are 215/15's (215/80/15). You can get Mud Terrain patterns from the likes of Insa Turbo (Saharas only), Kingpin etc, and 215/75/15's which are an easier size to get but not so big.

215/15's can be got in All Terrain patterns from a few manufacturers, of which, a reasonable manufacturer is CAMAC.

A far more popular size is 195/15's (195/80/15) which is slightly smaller than your 215/15's and is perhaps the best compromise between looking good and not losing your top speed too much. You can get pretty much anything in a 195/15.

You can work the overall diameter of the tyre out from these figures:

15 inches = 381mm

The prfile is as a % of the width, so for a 195/80/15, 80% of 195mm = 156mm. Overall diameter = 381+156+156=693mm = 27.3"

The idea being that i can sit at 60 without it screaming its nuts off....hopefully helping fuel too but that'd be a bonus. Am I barking up the wrong tree completely? :blush:

I can see where you're coming from and why, the troubl is that the larger the tyres the harder it is to get to 60mph and the more fuel you'll use getting there. Also you'll find it harder accelerating up to 70mph for that odd overtake on a lorry you want to do or maintain 60mph up a hill.

As such, if you want to change the tyre size soley to reduce revs at 60mph, I would say get some 195/80/15 Camacs. They are not too big, not too expensive, quiet enough on the road and will give you that little extra grip should you go on wet grass and in the snow in the winter but not bother you in the summer on the road. They'll also look quite cool compared to road orientated tyres.

There are cheaper all terrain tyres which would be remoulds. They could be ok but I would rather stick to new tyres if you do alot of high speed driving. At the expensive end are BFG All Terrains.

Perhaps another tread pattern could be Kumho KL71's. I use these and they are relatively quiet. They come in 195's too. They are a Mud Terain tyres though and grip on a wet road will be reduced compared to a road or all terrain tyre.

195 would be the size for you though I think, whatver tyre you choose.

I have got of 195 Trackers which were on it when I test drove it and can remember it being a little more settled at cruising speed....might whack em on for a week or so and see how I get on :)
