play in steering, not sure but... was created by sjwright
hi

im no mechanic, and i have play in the steering of my jimny, but checked it out anyway.

My track rod ends seem ok, but what looks like a ball joint on the end of the front drive shaft has quite a lot of wear and surface rust.

Whats the prognosis here?!

thanks in advance!

I would not worry too much about the wear and rust on your balls

Jimny steering is renowned for its positve feeling and accuracy

Best way forward is to jack up both front wheels at the same time if possible and generally rock the front wheels and steering to see if you can see where the play is occuring.

There are lots of areas that wear occurs from Kingpin bearings, wheel bearings through to the track rod ends.

If it is just steering play there is a pre-load adjustment on top of the steering box itself. Its not a hard job to adjust the pre-load, but it is difficult to access the adjuster.
