Personally I took the viscous fan off, opened up the case, let the oil escape then jammed the unit with cardboard and bolted it back together.

Thanks Martin. I realy didnt want to have to take it all apart, not yet anyway  . I have been told it can be done with cable ties. I had a go at the weekend but with no luck.
Any one else know how or done it before.

p.s. when i start the engine from cold should it start with a noticeable "roaring" sound and then slowly die away to a more normal tone?

Cheers mate. I was going to pm you seeing as it was you who first sugested it ;) . When you say metal housing do you mean the actual viscous clutch bit or the shaft it spins on . Sorry for my lack of understanding but i think i might be misunderstanding how the whole fan works
Thanks

Yes it should! If it is doing this then I would have thought it is operating correctly.
