Next time, remove the tap completely, coat with vaseline, or a suitable dry lubricant, graphite if you have fishing rods or silicon/ptfe before screwing back in.

The tap is a great idea: drain the coolant into a clean bowl, and it can go back in after the work is done.

Get a plain key cut at the keybar to open the doors (it will turn the ignition, but the immobiliser will prevent it starting the car.), if you snap your key off, put the plastic handle end on the same ring as the keybar key and it will still work with the immobiliser.

Dont lose the key.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

The idea of keeping the handle is a good one as a stop gap if you need multiple keys. Me wife and sons. What is the required proximity for the plastic handle? An idea might be to stick the handle inside the column cover somewhere close to the lock and have a couple of extra keys cut to use as suggested by previous correspondent. I know it reduces security and might enable the system to be bypassed, but better than having only one viable key.

In respect of the rad, I choose to drop the bottom hose as I fear the drain plug will be seized, the rubber seal will be perished or otherwise, leading to probs or a new rad. I use a Jubilee clip rather than re-use the crap factory one.

With the keys, your insurance company may not be too impressed about the transponder being taped to the immobiliser but the car thief will.

Good point re insurance company! Obviously, I have now removed the transponder from the immobiliser. In fact, it was never there!
