For offroading I would always prefer an external cage to an internal one

That's a nice looking cage :) one of my very early ones... was on a different truck originally...

My view is that ultimately you have a cage to protect yourself, not necessarily the car. Therefore an internal cage is better as you get protection from both the car shell and the cage. Also if you roll across a rock or something there is less chance of it collapsing the car shell. You can then also fit a diagonal more easily which is really essential for a strong cage.

Surely most rollovers whilst off roading (and thats what these cages are for) are going to be at very slow speed.
Its not like these are cages for racing cars that are designed to withstand high speed impacts.

the majority of pictures of Jimnys that have been on the side or roof without a cage the damage although widespread is normally not that major. (obvously there are exceptions)

I chose to fit an external cage, due to the fact that any roll over will be at a very slow speed, this is only to reduce the damage to the body shell, so a day at a pay n play doesn't end in tears after a light roll.

My preference in design is an internal B post hoop with cross bracing to protect you and an external cage to protect the vehicle.

The internal cage made to full MSA spec and the external one to a design that suits the application which is not necessarily the case with MSA approved designs.
