Can you help me lift this? was created by HiJim
G,day, long time reader first time caller here
This is my first post, and it's good to get involved,

I recently bought my very first jimny which is a 1999 jlx, nice clean car but as stock as they come, which is what I wanted, cause I want to turn it into MY mini monster :)

I'm completely new to 4x4's and I need some help with advice on a lift kit for my Zuk, I wanted a 3 inch setup with reasonably good on road drive and nice and tough for off road, although I won't be going to crazy for a while yet. So if someone could recommend a good brand/s for what I need plus the parts I will be requiring, my brother is very Cluey about cars and can help me install it, I just need to know all the parts I will need. Eg. Extended brake lines and what other complications I may run into.

A ver big cheers in advance for any help I may recieve,

Mark

The shop on here do good lift kits, as do jimnybits website. You'll also need extended brake hoses and probably castor correction bushes for the front radius arms, unless you don't mind having really fast/sensitive steering.

Are you from Oz?

If so you have a different choice of lift kits to those of us in the UK (although I understand Offroad Armory is expanding "Down Under")

If you choose a spring lift up to 2 inches you can get away without Castor Correction or longer brake lines.

So a build progression could be:

1. 2" Spring Lift
2. 1" or 2" Body Lift with new brake lines.

This would give an overall 3 or 4 in lift, in stages without resorting to Castor Correction. You could do it in either order (Body Lift First). If you are buying a Body Lift kit then go for a good quality one that makes provision for the extension to the steering and lifting of the bumper mounts. There are cheap "bent brackets and long bolts" ones on Ebay in the UK that rely on you drilling out the old nuts and bolting through a bit of box section which are not properly engineered solutions compared to billet machined ones with sleeved bolts.

This will give you results in affordable stages.

Alternatively, go for the full 3" spring lift. However , in my opinion, this will need Brake Lines and Castor Correction to be usable so can get expensive as an initial outlay.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Yes, im from Aus!
i wanted to do a 2 or 3 inch Suspension lift perhaps with a 1 inch body lift (still not to sure as i think there would be to much body roll?)

i have thought about: Tough Dog shocks, with King springs, then all the other pieces i need,

you guys have any thoughts on that setup, plus if you could tell me what the other pieces i need are haha, i really have no clue! say i was going for a 3" suspension kit.

also where would be the best site to get them, Keep in mind im in Aus :P

thanks again guys,

Mark

HI JIM
I was in nz for a while and I lifted a sa80 coily I had to get the springs made and I had adjustable
rancho shocks. Over here I put a set of old man emu 2" on standard shocks with shock spacers .
I like ome as they come handed which mean that one side is slighly a stronger spring which stop one side from sinking after a time due to the twist the engine produces through the prop. They are in my mind as good as the original jimny springs. And more than up to the challenge.
There is two types of springs from ome hard or soft. I went for soft and never regretted it.
If I wanted a good setup for on and off road I would choose ome 2" soft with 9000 rancho shocks as I would be able to turn them right up to hard for road and super soft for the rough or fast rutted stuff. B)
2" ome does not sound high but it is. And with big tyres it really transforms the truck. Plus you can leave your breaklines and the truck will be ok to drive, plus no need for castor corrections. I feel that with the rancho's it would be a good set up. Plus I would leave the front sway bar on.
Oh and welcome to bigjimny where brains and brawn go together. B)
