Sticky 1st gear was created by Chilgrove
I often find engaging 1st gear after being stopped is a bit "sticky" and sometimes it does not properly engage so gearbox gives the 'orrible noise we all know and love. Is there any lubrication I can apply to the gear stick or is this just worn synchromesh? All ideas and suggestions gratefully received. By the way I am careful to press down the clutch fully. Mileage showing 19000 only. Year 2006.

Have you checked the manual gearbox fluid level? Top up with 75w90 if it does not trickle out when you remove the filler plug.
Mine can be difficult to engage when slowing down unless the speed is low enough, and 2nd is difficult for the first 5mins when cold, but my car has done 96k!

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Mine won't go in 1st when cold.
I use sx75w90 gear oil and it is a little better than when I had it.
If it is moving I just slip the clutch gently in 2nd. When stationary it is a case of dabbing the clutch up and down until it feels like going in.
Mine has done 110,000 miles.

you may get a surprise like I did....

Thanks for the advice. I do find going into 1st easier if moving forward slowly. Worse usually if completely stopped. Is it easy to check the gearbox level?

The filler plug is up on the side of the gearbox, right where you can't get at it.
You will need one of those oil filler syringes that machine mart sell to get oil into it.

Location of filler correct, BUT do what I did and get one of these :
It is by far the best purchase I have ever made, it is so easy to fill these gearboxes, diffs, transfer boxes or anything similar. Well worth the investment
