Sounds like you need to alight both of your selectors proprly before re-fitting the lever...
Take the lever out and look down in the hole, you must alighn both the selectors to the front before re-fitting the lever... this can be done with either the lever itself or a large screwdriver....

Aligned the selectors this morning and worked brilliantly but after a quick drive it just locks again and I have to remove the lever and repeat! There seems to be alot of play in the lever itself could it be worn?

I dunno if its any help but brand new Jimnys would do this sometimes (up to 30ish miles)
Our solution at the dealer was to drive it up to 4000 revs in 1st gear, dip the clutch select reverse and lt the clutch up quickly.
It would violently bring you to a halt but it always worked!
Was told to me by a Suzuki employee on a course, shhh!
