You get high SWRs with a mag mount ? those are pretty much plug & play, other than adjusting the antenna length you don't have to do much with them. Is the antenna cable ok ? where did you place the mag mount ?

yea even with the mag mount witch i had placed on the roof farily central, the coax on the fixed mount on the tailgate is brand new and the mag tests ok with a mulit meter i was wondering if the swr meter could be faulty or the cb its self but i cant see how the cb would effect the swr/ iv seen alot of jimnys with antenas on the spare wheel carrier as mine is but i was wondering if maybe i had to run a seprate earth wire to the antena if the boot hindges were plastic bushed? im really just wondering if its a common thing to be honest? its got me a little stumped

Where on the bootlid do you have it mounted? if the antenna is too close to other metal it can give high readings. As vaxxi says though it should work on the mag mount. Are is it any better in the higher channels or lower channels?

You should have a good groundplane there so it shouldnt be that, its probably the cable or the swr meter, i know my meter is a pain, it needs to be totally level to read correctly, i have my aerial right in the middle of my roof and get an swr of 1 - 1.5 right across all channels. are you testing this well away from any buildings or other sources of interference? shouldnt usually cause a problem but can do.
