Hi Guys, Last week we had our 2002 Jimny MOT'd and the tester pointed out that on landies etc the big steering swivel joints are covered with a leather or rubber gaiter. Does anyone make such a thing for the Jimny as our tester was a little concerned by the surface rusting on ours? I assume it would be like one of those drive shaft gaiters that are split down the side to allow fitting without disturbing the joint and retained at the hub end by the eight bolts in the hub.

Ypur comments would be appreciated

It is an "optional extra" on a Landrover. Fine for on road use, but as soon as you start using it in water and mud some will get in, then it cannot get out again.

I had the leather ones on my series III, I don't think they stopped any leaks, just stopped the mot tester seeing that the swivel housings were leaking ;)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Your tester is obviously a landrover man, it's been said before the swivels and seals on a jim do a comlpetely different job to that on a green oval. The LR ones keep the gear oil in the swivel to lube the CV so if theyge pitted and leaking the CV could fail. on the Jim there's no oil in the swivel, the CV's are greased, and the seal is just to keep the dust/water/crap out so pitting isn't a problem. if on the other hand there is gearoil leaking from them then it's come from the diff through the axle oil seal because there's play in the king pin bearings.

On the 8th Day God made the LandRover -
On the 9th day he swapped it for a Jimny.

I know that some people fit the Landrover Gaiters to Jimnys.

If the rust is concerning you just give the swivel a wipe with a greasy rag occasionally or take the hub off, give it a skim of filler, rub down and paint.
