Transfer Case Chain - myths? was created by gabitzu
Hello,
I have a VVT Jimny, so for me by far the easiest/cheapest solution for gearing would be the so called "Special Low Range Gearset". but reading this forum, it seems that everyone will say that if you do this, then your T-case chain will break. And also one some other jimny forums there are people quoting this. But I did some searching about borken chains, and i seems there was just one case with problems, and all the discussions were based on that.

Now I am in no way associated to the italian guy, and I do not have the gearset in my Jimny, I just want to have it, and so I am really interested in finding the facts: Has more than one Jimny owner had problems with the chain, with or without the special gearset, or it was just a "i heard from someone who knoes someone" kind of thing ?

Also I used to have a 3.0 Toyota Landcruiser, which had the t-case with chain so it couldn't be such a lousy solution (that-case was damaged beyond repair, btw, but for very different reasons, the whole case, pinions were destroyed).

This has been discussed on here but I believe Martin has "first hand" experience. Things became a little "legal" so any opinions and test were removed. Im sure someone will PM you off the public forum.

That's exactly my dillema: it seems only martin has had "first hand" experience with this, the rest are just rumours based on martin's experience. That's why I asked if anyone else has had problems with the chain, modified or not.
For me, it's the only possible solution, but I want to be extra sure before I give my money, if there is really a problem, I will find another way.

Personal opinion here, the reduction gears are a good idea, I like the idea of retaining the simplistic Transfer box the Jimny has too.

For me, the deciding factor was the poor construction of the Jimny transfer box full stop ... the casing is well known for being weak and the cast mounting brackets can leave you completely immobile if you snap one whilst offroading.

for me, a Rock Lobster box costing around £500 was the only bulletproof option, plus, when I eventually kill the Jimny, I can either sell the box on or transplant it into another vehicle.

I guess though, if your transfer box is in good condition, and you know the chain is good (maybe even going to the trouble of replacing the chain, then reduction gears may be a viable option)

I understand your point. I also like the Rocklobster, in a bulletproof basket-support. But for the Jimny VVT, just swapping the *normal* t-case (no rocklobster gear change) would give ~30% reduction ... which is a bit much for me B)

The other way would be to put a *normal* Sami case, and swap the gears in the axle (4.3) for some custom ones for the diesel version (3.7), that being close to the ~20% reduction I desire, or the *old version* jimny ones (3.909)

so you can understand why I said for me, the "special gearset" is cheaper and easier.
