M13A engine into 1999 hardtop ? was created by Gromit
Probably been asked before but will the later M13A engine go into an older (1999) hardtop without any major problems as my old SOHC engine is getting tired & leaky ??

AFAIK, the gearbox wont fit, and the engine electrics are different.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

As Facade says - the bell housing is different and will not bolt up to your gearbox.

The electronics side of things is fixable with the likes of Megasquirt.

A simpler and cheaper solution would be to source a Vitara 1.6 engine. You still need an adaptor plate to convert between the two, but the are readily available from the BJ shop, Rhino Ray and others.

You are supposed to tell them the engine number of a replacement engine (box on your V5)* , and I guess the new capacity as well: the M13A is slightly larger.

This could trigger some official interest, so make sure you can prove it wasn't stolen, or out of a car that should have been destroyed under the scrappage scheme, or whichever insurance category means "crush the lot".

No doubt your insurance company will treat a different engine from original specification as a modification, and if they are not informed too refuse to pay out if you have an accident :S

*Never understood why there is a box to change the chassis/VIN number: you get the new one stamped with the old number and destroy the old one AFAIK. If you put down a chassis number that is already registered the police would be straight round.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
