I am pricing up a set of mods and mt tyres in a different size to the originals as a second set. Is a second spare wheel and tyre required in the new mt size? Or can the car be driven in two wheel drive with the standard size spare tyre on the front in the event of an emergency to get us home?
I personally have the standard wheel / tyre as a spare for the same reason ... If I have a problem, then Ill limp home. If im off road, then Ill just use the tyre as it is... yes it will get ruined, but I only run remoulds so its not going to be megga money.
Also, as I have larger diameter wheels and tyres fitted than standard, it isnt po9ssible without modification to mount a similar sized tyre

Was always told not to put different size wheels opposite each other on the same axle with a diff. And thought that on the front, once the hubs are unlocked (in 2wd) then this wouldn't put any strain on the diff.
I've heard similiar advice but i've only got a standard steel on the back door with one of my worn at's on it. You could rotate but then it would be on the steering and you would be compensating in the steering.
Unless you are running a massive difference in tyres i can't see it being an issue to limp home. As others have pointed out space savers are different sizes.
