Problem with jackshafts was created by FIRSTJIMNY
Went for my MOT. I have a 2001 Jimny (left-hand drive) they said there was a lot of play in the jackshafts.
Service said it was necessary to change 2 of the 3 jackshafts. Wanted a huge amount of money. Why can't the universal joints (I think you guys call them c.v.'s) just be changed to take care of the problem?
I found replacement shafts at Zanfi.it that have c.v.'s at both ends. With this stop the problem? I'm not
familiar with this but don't want to keep buying jackshafts.
Anything you have to share will be appreciated.

We call them Universal Joints as well, the C.V joints are on the front half-shafts.
The later propshafts have changeable U.Js. The earlier ones don't show them as being changeable but I have never looked.

thanks for the help. i have quite a bit of play in the front shaft and a little in the rear. will changing the u joints correct this or does something else need to be done? as you can tell i know little about this kind of thing.
if they aren't changeable does that necessitate changing the whole propshaft?
thanks

Hi
If as Martin says you mean propshafts, you can change just the UJs on the props - you can on my 1999 one as I had one on the front prop done - take the prop to a propshaft/driveline company and they will do it for you (cost about £40 each in the UK)
also check to see if they have grease nipples - pumping some thick grease in may firm them up enough to pass the mot and then you can get them fixed as you can afford
You only really need wide angle uj's if you have a lift over 3" and you can tell by looking at the flanges around the uj to see if there is any contact damage
